If you’re in need of inspiration, you have to check out this mesmerizing photostream from New Zealand photography studio, Cuba Gallery. It is packed with images that are always evocative, sometimes moody, and occasionally even witty. There are lush forests draped with mist, soothing beaches, and thought-provoking urban compositions. All of them showcase Adobe Lightroom processing techniques. But it’s the retro still life images that I particularly love and, this being an interiors blog, I thought they were the most apt ones to post here.

Dip into the rest of the photostream for a visual treat!

You’ll recognize photographer Laura Resen‘s work from the pages of several interiors magazines. She counts among her clients the likes of Architectural Digest, Harpers Bazaar, Elle Decor, French Vogue, Living Etc, House Beautiful and Domino magazine. But, despite this stylish line-up, the homes she photographs all seem to share a key quality: they’re truly inviting.

Flooded with clear, natural daylight, the spaces in her pictures are both elegant and comfortable. There’s a restrained palette throughout her portfolio but attention to details such as texture ensures each photo is one you want to step into (and sit down and curl up in…)

It helps that Resen has worked with designers such as Thomas O’Brien, whose house in Bellport, Long Island ranks up there with one of my favorite interiors ever. (In fact, she collaborated with O’Brien on a book that just came out this year).

But, whether it’s cool white living rooms, effortlessly styled bedrooms or glorious sun-washed patios, this is one stunning portfolio. In fact, I had a hard time picking just a few images to post here.

There’s also a lesson to be learned from Resen’s still life photos. I was struck by the use of layers, particularly layers of objects in harmonious colors. The effect is not only beautiful, but can also be applied when styling a home to achieve that lived-in, inviting vibe. From layering whites…

To different blues…

To metallics…

To dramatic black…

And contrasting hues…

All in all, I encourage you to check out Laura Resen’s site for inspiration. You won’t be disappointed.

Welcome to 2010! To mark the start of the New Year, and before I turn my attention back to interiors, I thought I’d post a few photos taken by my father-in-law in England. We didn’t get to travel back there this Christmas, but these images really sum up the countryside at this time of year: cold but bewitchingly beautiful.

May your 2010 be as serene as these pictures…

This picture of my husband and son was taken (by my brother-in-law) at Ocean Beach, just a few blocks from our house. It seemed such a fitting way to illustrate the end of 2009. It sums up a year that, although tough (who can claim to have had an easy 2009?), was very much about family. This year, more than ever, we’ve started to feel settled here in San Francisco and are appreciating everything about where we live. We’re excited about what 2010 will bring. There’s both peace and hope in this picture – and I can’t think of a better combination for the end of one year and the start of another.

Happy New Year to everyone. May it be your best yet.

It looks like it’s going to be a lovely sunny day in San Francisco (is the August fog over??). So we’re going to try and get out and about to the park, the beach maybe. In making our plans, I was reminded of this lovely photo, spotted on Flickr a while back, of a window in the Marina District.

Marina

The Marina, with its views of the Bay, beach and space to run or walk, is a great place to spend a sunny weekend in SF. The extremely grand houses overlooking the Marina all have these fabulous picture windows. I’d love to explore some of these houses one day and look through those windows from the other direction. I like the way this photo captures the reflected sky and picks up the yellows in the flowers and the exterior paint. Tranquil yet happy – just right for a sunny Saturday morning.

Have a good weekend everyone.

The July issue of Elle Decoration UK features the home of Danish photographer, Ditte Isager. The apartment may be in New York, but you’d be forgiven for thinking it was in Denmark because the place is so light and fresh. What I loved about her place is the way it looks as though it has evolved over years.

Of course, since I can’t link to the magazine as it has no website (what is that??) I went off in search of Ditte’s portfolio. And I wasn’t disappointed.

Ditte Isager

Ditte has a way of capturing texture. The colors in her photos are very subtle, but the textures are the real stars. There’s an interior design lesson in there somewhere…

Who knew a pile of wood, some sticks and some leaves could look so great?

She also does beautiful travel photos – Alek this would be right up your street!

As another day of freezing San Francisco fog closes, I’m wondering if it can really be summer everywhere else in the country. (That’s the downside of this city – but, not to worry, we get our own back in October when it’s flip flop weather again here). So I was heartily warmed to find these sunny pictures by photographer Penny Wincer. Doesn’t this look like the perfect way to spend an afternoon? Tea and cake by the sea…. (with adorable blue and white table settings to boot).

What I really love about these photos is that they’re so clean, vibrant and, well, present. By that I mean there’s no barrier between the viewer and the picture. I don’t feel as though I’m peeking at a fleeting, stolen moment. I feel like I could walk up and join the picnic.

Looking at some of Penny’s other work, you can see the same trait.

Color palette

These photos are a perfect study of color. Aren’t they absolutely mouthwatering? And you can see the honesty and simplicity in these shots too. We’re not being told to feel a certain way – we’re just enjoying the eye candy (at least, I am!).

I was struck recently by this photo, by Petrina Tinslay. What a perfect image! That sky is just glorious. You couldn’t help but relax here.

It made me want a room with this combination of rosy pink, amber and deep violet. I found a few that are similar.

Anybody found any more? I have a feeling this is going to turn into quite the quest.

If you’ve ever wondered where interior design magazines stage their photo shoots, you should check out some of the location agencies’ web sites. I’ve been browsing Light Locations recently. There are dozens of wonderful homes (mostly English, although some are overseas) to ogle. Granted, they’re a little depersonalized, as you’d expect. But this is the cream of the crop when it comes to light, space and architectural details. I even recognize a few from memorable features that have graced the pages of my favorite design mags.

There are country houses:

Go on, I challenge you to find one that isn’t your style…

It’s Sunday morning and that means endless cups of tea. So, to accompany that simple pleasure, here are some beautiful photos inspired by the great British cuppa… All photos are by Polly Wreford (represented by Sarah Kaye), whose work I absolutely adore.
